ABOUT

Dr. Christine Howlett is an Associate Professor and Director of Choral Activities at Vassar College, where she directs the Vassar College Choir and Treble Chorus (formerly named "Women's Chorus). She was chair of the department from 2016-2020, and 2021-2023. Her ensembles have toured in Cuba, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Turkey, and Uganda,. In 2024, the choirs will travel to Vienna and Prague. The Vassar College Women’s Chorus was honored to perform at the NCCO National Conference in 2009 and Eastern Region ACDA conferences in 2010 and 2014. She has commissioned works by Libby Larsen, Eleanor Daley, Tarik O'Regan, Leonard Enns, Thomas Juneau, Tim Takach, Max Vladimiroff, and Shavon Lloyd. Upcoming commissions include works by Katerina Gimon and Caroline Shaw. 

Her edition of Gasparini’s Mass for Five Voices is published by A-R Editions, and the recording Love Raise Your Voice is available on iTunes. 

 

In 2023, Howlett was named music director of the Greenwich Choral Society, an organization that will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025-2026. 

Since 2006, she has directed Cappella Festiva, an organization that supports an adult community choir and three children’s choruses in the Hudson Valley. She is a guest conductor for the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and has prepared choruses for performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

She was active in NY ACDA and Eastern Region ACDA from 2010-2021, and served as President of the New York American Choral Directors Association from 2017-2019, an organization that supports over 600 choral directors statewide. She earned degrees in Voice Performance from the University of Toronto, a Masters in Early Music Voice Performance, and a DMA in Choral Conducting from Indiana University.
